pixie dancing

some people believe that pixie dancing is responsible for the turning of the earth and that this dancing is the work they do to keep us spinning on this big beautiful floating rock.

it has been said that pixies choose to be joyful in this dancing because they know that a merry heart makes light work.

sending you a heaping sprinkle of stardust for your weekend...may you remember the pixies and weave a lighthearted dance into your days.

the innkeeper's pup

my darling dog, daria jean beauty queen, was photographed last weekend by my talented urban tribe member lance of astigmatism productions...

{soul gazing}

{sun dog}

{licky loo + naked neck}

i have looked at these photos at least three hundred and seventy two times, and each time i do my heart fills with enormous love for my dear pup.

in my opinion, great photography captures essence. beautiful photos make me feel like the soul of the subject has been recorded. i sense that the photographer was compassionate, observant, and patient to notice and artfully document the real feel of a being.

thank you, lance, for your beautiful photography.

i am excited to share that lance and i have a creative project brewing, although it's tippy top secret for now...but stay tuned for an artistic collaboration betwixt two old friends.

foodstuff: insalata caprese

insalata caprese is on my top ten list of favorite things to eat in the whole wide world.

fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and fragrant basil all drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar...ah, i find such gustatory joy in this simple but stellar flavor combination.

one of my favorite food/craft/prop stylists, sweet paul, recently posted a delightfully enticing photo of caprese skewers...

this photo is the reason i now have a refrigerator full of fresh ciliegine, heirloom cherry tomatoes, and organic greek basil.

it is also the reason i know that sweet paul's summer digital magazine launches tomorrow morning (06/10/11).

have you seen sweet paul's beautiful digital magazines? if not, check out spring 2011 or fall 2010. i'm in love!

this weekend i plan to eat a lovely plate of caprese while i look at sweet paul's latest brilliance: summer 2011.

{gallery} the depression in color

my best friend benjamin discovered a collection of photos this week that i find mesmerizing, poignant, and beautiful...

Color America

it is a series of images in the united states between 1939 -> 1943 from the library of congress exhibit "bound for glory: america in color" shared via the denver post photo blog...

Color America

these pictures were taken by photographers of the farm security administration/office of war information and are some of the only color photographs which capture the impact of the great depression on small town life during that time...

Color America

it was extremely difficult for me to choose just three to illustrate the spirit of the entire gallery. i hope these three will inspire you to look at the rest...there are so many breathtaking photos in the collection.

wishing you a lovely weekend, my friends!

the treehouse

the first thing you see when you walk through the front door of our home is an enormous photo of a beautiful redwood tree.

this majestic beauty is hanging in the center of the house and gives the illusion that a giant tree is growing up through the middle of our space.

it is the reason we affectionately refer to our abode as "the treehouse."

my friend lance visited us recently and captured this image of me in the tree...

lance caught this moment with his fabulous camera when i peeked my pixie head over the edge of my loft to make a silly face at him.

i think it is great fun to live in a treehouse.

it is difficult to realize
how great a part of all that is cheerful and delightful
in the recollections of our own life
is associated with trees.

macro photo studio

during my senior year of high school, i took a photography course and love love loved it.

i have a vivid sense memory of the processing chemical smell in the dark room.

sadly, that class is the extent of my formal photography training.

i am determined to teach myself to shoot amazing pictures!

thanks to lee of leethal, i found this strobist tutorial on how to make your own macro studio with ten bucks and super simple materials.

here are two photos to illustrate the concept...

 ...this is at the top of my "to make" list!

i shall report back to you with details and photos when my studio is ready.
