{music} a sweet tweet
please allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite places in the twitterverse:
a month ago, musicians kevyn smith and jeremy johnson selected one of my tweets...
and turned it into this...
i was completely over the moon about this! utterly squee-tastic! so thrilled and silly that i've been gushing about it ever since.
this duo is talented, hilarious, and smart. they make me laugh daily! i love their experiment. it makes me happy and is precisely my kind of fun.
gentlemen, thank you for taking the time to turn my tweet into a sweet. bravo for your stellar sense of humor and constant creativity, oh wondrous tweet troubadours!
follow this project on twitter and visit the blog to view a fabulous collection of past sweets.
"We had an idea. What if we picked tweets we liked from people and made them into songs? Would it be easy? Would people like it? We could call them "sweets."
A social experiment in music. A way to highlight tweets we love from people we love to follow. You tweet it, we sing it. Songs in 140 characters or less."
a month ago, musicians kevyn smith and jeremy johnson selected one of my tweets...
right now: studio. glitter. coffee. @smasheltooth. photography. glorious saturday!

collection: in a word {round two}
here is the collection of words from my bag that have zoomed all over the globe this week...
a few details:
* i pulled each word randomly from rob brezsny's pronoia.
* the words are written on paint chips gifted to me years ago by a dear friend and talented designer.
* the background is frank lloyd wright wrapping paper from pomegranate.
* the photos were captured and edited on my diphone with the camera+ app.
there are still words swirling in the glitter...feel free to drop me a line if you would like one.

{design} mod santa
i discovered this fantastic santa in a crate of vintage holiday cards at a local antique store.
this particular saint nick instantly captured my heart for four reasons:
i am a sucker for stripes.
always.
there is no mention on the card of company, designer, or year.
i'm guessing somewhere in the sixties?
swoon!
the card is flocked with red velvet
which transports me instantly back to my childhood.
our early seventies home had two rooms
which were covered in flocked foil wallpaper.
i was smitten with the velvety stuff.
check out this fabulous lettering
from the inside of the card...
this is what a one dollar treasure from an artist date does for me.
ho ho ho!

{party} finale: favors
hello from the inn!
four lovely guests responded to my birthday treat posts...

a scharffen berger chocolate bar + a moleskine journal will be winging to each of you from the inn!
please email me your current snail mail details at your earliest convenience.
thank you for joining my party, dear friends!

{party} unpause
hello there, sweet friends!
your innkeeper took more of a party pause than originally intended.
you see, things got quite cozy and introspective yesterday at the inn.
many hours were spent snuggled up on the couch with coffee and blankets...
instead of continuing the party, i took the time to read through every single post since my birthday last year.
as i wandered through three hundred and sixty five days of life at the inn, i felt amazed and grateful.
i find it mind-boggling to be able to create an imaginary world of my dreams and to have other people participate in it with me.
i find it wondrous to meet and interact with such fascinating souls from all over the globe, artists and thinkers and feelers and poets and chefs and teachers and makers and writers.
i find it meaningful to carry the lens of "innkeeper" with me throughout my days, to be able to share my stories here and see them scattered throughout the world...
in retrospect, my thirty-sixth year was a delight.
it was an adventure.
it was full of love.
it was magical.
thank you for being here + for reading about my journey.
i truly appreciate your presence at the inn.
xoxo

{party} favor: moleskine pocket journals
one of my favorite things in the world is a small journal.
tiny cahiers travel well and are easy to fill. i feel a sense of abundance with a little blank book which allows me to let go of perfectionism and just create.

on the occasion of my birthday, i felt like sharing this feeling with you! so i walked into our local art supply store this morning and purchased this trio of moleskine cahiers...
earlier this year, i used one of these journals to draw zentangles.
now i have a brand new package of three snappy red plain journals to gift to one of you!
these are quite fun to decorate. they are made of cardboard and can be adorned with paint, stamps, stickers, photos, or anything else your heart desires.
i will send these (along with a love note from the inn) to one special guest.

{party} vintage innkeeper memories
six-year-old me with my birthday cake...
six-year-old me after my little sister used a toddler ninja move on my birthday cake...
isn't my mother's hair fantastic?
she wrote the following on the back of the first photo...
"merlin" looked like this...
this commercial was the reason i wanted the toy (six electronic games in one?! wow!)...
just a glimpse of little me from over thirty years ago.

{party} favor: dark chocolate + coffee
your innkeeper adores chocolate.
your innkeeper adores coffee.
as a special treat for my birthday party, i am gifting one guest a marvelous combination of the two flavors...
this beautiful bar is a san francisco classic. it is rich dark chocolate with the delicate crunch of freshly roasted and finely ground sumatran coffee.
oh yes - a match made in heaven!
i will send this delicious gift (along with a love note from the inn) to one special guest.
simply leave a comment below about chocolate or coffee (or both!) and i will randomly select one on wednesday november twenty-third.
also: there are more treats to be shared later in the party! several of my very favorite things will be gifted to you, my favorite guests in the universe.
until then, i hope you'll write to me about chocolate wonders or a robust cuppa joe...

{costume} la calavera catrina
your innkeeper transformed into the queen of the underworld this weekend...
i designed my very own version of "la calavera catrina" ("the elegant skull") to wear for halloween and dia de los muertos celebrations...
this character is thought to have originated as mictecacihuatl, ancient aztec goddess of the underworld who watches over the bones of the dead...
my inspiration for this costume started earlier this year at burning man. it began with the stunning skeleton boatman in the stroboscopic zoetrope "charon" and intertwined with neighbors who painted intricate body art daily. i became fascinated with the imagery as well as the artistry...
i am compelled by this character because it is a juxtaposition of the macabre and the beautiful; death is playfully adorned with colorful ornamentation.
it was so much fun to create this costume - dramaturgical research, an inspiration board, an embroidered vintage dress, glittery flowers and feathers, detailed face painting...joy!
have any of you created or worn costumes this year? this theatre girl would love to hear about your fine frippery...

{adventure} desert journey
this week has been wonderful madness.
school started on wednesday...a whole new year with thirty-three vivacious middle school kiddos ready to act their hearts out in my classroom.
i also spent every single day wildly scurrying around to pack my gear for a week in the desert.
in the morning, i launch for burning man...
in a few hours i begin my journey of desert beauty, incredible art, old and new friendships, dancing, exploration, dusty dust, meditation, fire fire fire, bike riding, parties, sunsets, mutant vehicles, yoga, and so very much more.
i am thoroughly excited to document the journey and share it with you when i return.
before i go, i must declare my profound gratitude to my tribe of friends. words are not in any way adequate to express all that my friends have done for me over the years, and especially in the last few weeks. i feel deeply thankful for the love of such amazing people.
i would also like to declare my adoration for you, dear guests! you inspire me to new heights. i am always thinking of you, constantly dreaming up ways to show you innkeeper creativity and love. thank you for all of your kind words and for being guests here at the inn.
with that, i bid you adieu for a week as i march forward into the desert sun. i shall see you in september with a head full of dust and a heart full of love.

{dance} out of my mind
last night i went out and danced. it was a hot sweaty summer soiree with a room full of wildly grooving humans. a brilliant dj created a masterful soundscape which compelled me to dance with mental abandon for hours.
musical movement is an excellent thing for me when i have a head full of confusion...
dancing allows me to let go.
and friends, sometimes i really need to let go.
dance is a sweet, sacred relief from all the thinking that goes on in the cranium of this innkeeper...
it feels deeply important to express feelings without needing to use words. there are some feelings for which there are no words, and dancing allows me to have a wordless soul session with my deep self.
also, connecting with other people in dance is profoundly healing...
when i am dancing, archetypes of characters in my life story float around and engage with me. i find this is difficult to explain, but the theater girl in me can best say it with will's words: all the world's a stage. the players dance about for me and help me untangle the oft perplexing snarls which intellect cannot tame.
laughter, sadness, mischief, confusion, heartbreak, joy, longing, anger, desire, loneliness, creativity, and grace can all be poured out onto the dance floor. it is a swirl of human experience, and within it we are each alone and yet totally together.
tell me, friends: have you danced lately? what does dancing do for you?

{love} roll with it
as is sometimes the case in the life of an artist, i am currently navigating the exhilarating highs and deep dark lows of being a sensitive soul.
when i am murking around in the muck of existential angst, i focus on little acts of love for myself.
like going roller skating...
or wandering around in the used book store dreaming of paris...
or watching cool videos with big thumpy expansive music...
just a few teeny tiny ways i metaphorically hug myself and say: sweet lifelong friend, i adore you. let's have some fun together, shall we?
dear guests, you deserve these acts of kindness. have you gone on a fun little date with yourself lately?

foodstuff: fresh pasta
your innkeeper has finally crossed the threshold of noodlecraft.
this week, i made my first pasta from scratch...
these fresh spaghetti noodles were created with the help of my beloved stand mixer who is also known as "the mixin' vixen"...
(do you see her winking at you in the sparkly glow of warm evening sunshine? what a saucy piece of machinery she is.)
the pasta is a simple dough made of flour, eggs, and water which gets squeezed through this mixer attachment, play-dough fun factory style...
the pasta dries briefly on a towel before getting plunged into a giant pot of salty boiling water...
once cooked, it is fluffy, light, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
betwixt bites, kevwrex and i enthusiastically proclaimed our love for it.
so it's official: we are adding pasta to our growing list of food (pizza dough or marshmallows, anyone?) that is ten gazillion times yummier when made from scratch at home.
dear guests, do any of you make your own pasta? any recipes or advice for a brand new noodler like me?
